MASSIVE ATTACK ON TITAN SPOILERS HERE

What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?

In a world where everyone is experiencing massive trauma constantly, this is a hard thing to pin down. Eren both experiences and perpetuates massive amounts of trauma. Ultimately, though, the thing that scarred Eren the most was the death of his mother. That whole day was a shit show, the day the Titans showed up and busted through the walls, but for Eren specifically, it was his mother's death that he remembered. Watching her get eating by the smiling titan would become a memory that played over and over in Eren's head for the next several years, sometimes distracting him and making him freeze up, and sometimes sending him into a violent rage. He'd always wanted to go beyond the walls, but this incident was when he first started saying he was going to kill all the titans in the world and free humanity.

What experience challenged your character's core beliefs? How did they handle this or change from it?

There are two things that come to mind here. First, when the very few remaining members of the Survey Corps reached the basement where Eren's dad kept his knowledge of the titans, it changed basically everything that Eren (and the others) thought they knew about the world. They found out that not only were they not the last of humanity, as they'd all been raised to believe, but that all titans were humans once. They had been killing humans the entire time.

Eren had always vowed that he would eliminate the titans and save humanity, but what did that mean when they weren't the last of humanity? What he learned from his dad's journal was that there were others beyond the shores of their island; this was the first step towards Eren believing that anyone not on Paradis Island was his enemy.

Second, when Eren touched Historia's hand and unlocked not only the Founding Titan's power but the Attack Titan's power, he saw not only the past memories of those who had come before him (as all titan shifters can), but those in the future. The Attack Titan's true power allows the wielder to see the memories of future holders of the titan's power. From here on, Eren could see what would happen, and started experiencing time in a non-linear fashion. He's not omniscient enough to see every tiny thing, but he knew what would come, what he would do, and it changed him from the would-be hero type to a person who would become the kind of villain who would destroy the world to keep his remaining loved ones safe.

Eren's refrain that he is free/was born free, from here on, became false. He would be basically a slave to the future he saw, doing nothing to change it (perhaps unable to do anything to change it), moving toward an end he experienced as already having happened, even if he hates it.

What would your character sacrifice to get what they want or to reach their potential? What have they sacrificed already?

There's practically nothing Eren will not give. (Insert Thanos "what did it cost / everything" gif)

In the actual canon, he reaches his full potential of freeing Ymir Fritz, the first titan, and using her power to awaken the titans sleeping in the walls that used to surround him to trample over the rest of the world. He becomes a villain, setting up a situation where either his former companions would kill him, or he would actually just kill everyone left on earth (and a ton of people from his own island, actually).

He pushed Mikasa and Armin away, even telling Mikasa he hated her, and getting in a fistfight with Armin where he was brutally violent towards the other boy. He knew it would hurt them to be cruel, but he did it to save them, keep them out of immediate harm, and free them to eventually kill him so they'd be seen as heroes.

He knew so many of the deaths and pain that would come from his actions, and he did all of it anyway, doing nothing to stop Sasha or Hange from dying, to keep Levi from nearly dying thanks to Zeke, doing nothing to save many of the military from being turned into titans and killed. He kept saying that he was free, had been born free (though as I said, that's not exactly the case, whether he recognises it or not). He pushed his own father into killing the Reiss family, including children. He gave up his own humanity, suppressing his emotions, doing things he'd never have done before like killing innocent civilians. His motivations were always to keep the people he loved from having to deal with invasion and war. Eren's determination is iron clad, really, and he's willing to let people hate him, and even willing to hate himself.

ABILITIES

ACCELERATED HEALING

Eren can heal from really terrible wounds, including having his arms/legs cut off. The amount of time it takes his body to heal varies, but he was able to grow back a missing leg in minutes. Basically as long as you don't take his head off/injure his brain stem, he won't die. Even then, apparently you can't write him off ;D

ATTACK TITAN

He can turn into a 15 meter (~49 feet) tall titan. With this comes brutal strength and the ability to take massive amounts of damage. He's much faster in this form, obviously, and has a serious amount of endurance. He also has the ability to harden parts of his body, or to leave behind a hard bit of crystal (like think a whole 15-foot tall body's worth of it). This stuff isn't unbreakable but it's very difficult to break.

As a note, he must be able to injure himself in order to transform. If he's fully restrained and unable to hurt himself, he can't turn into a titan at all. He can also become too exhausted to do it, especially if he uses the transformation many times in a row. That said, he can use this transformation quite a few times before he becomes unable to do so anymore. He's had practice.

All titan shifters are able to see the memories of people who held the ability of that particular titan before they did. Eren is no exception to this. SPOILERS the Attack Titan, though, can also see future memories from its wielder. Eren doesn't actually have any of that, since he is/will be the final person to hold the Attack Titan's power. All of these memories, he experiences sort of simultaneously, not in a linear way, and it can be confusing whose memory he's seeing or what time point he's at.

Eren can still be injured or incapacitated in this form, though the only way to kill him is to damage the back of the titan's neck so severely that his regular human body dies, since that's where Eren's physical body exists when transformed. He is very good at avoiding death, though.

FOUNDING TITAN

If Eren comes into physical contact with someone who has royal blood (Zeke and Historia are pretty much it), he can control Pure Titans (the mindless ones, basically), unleashing them on others. This is obviously unlikely to be a thing that I use/need to use, but sure, he can theoretically do this. He can also rewrite people's memories this way, but that only works on Eldians so again, it's not really something that would come up as far as I know!

WAR HAMMER TITAN

The War Hammer titan can manifest weapons and structures made out of hard crystal, basically. This can protect Eren from being harmed; these spikes and structures don't have to come out of Eren's titan body, either, they can come from the ground if he's touching the ground.
